In Conversation with Desiree Akhavan is proudly presented by Screen Australia, Film Victoria, RMIT University & the Australian Film Television and Radio School for the Australian Directors’ Guild.

Desiree Akhavan is an American writer, director and actor working in indie film and TV and the daughter of Iranian parents.  Her breakout feature Appropriate Behaviour (which she also stars in) premiered at Sundance and is a queer cult classic.  Her second feature The Miseducation of Cameron Post, won the Grand Jury Prize Dramatic at Sundance.  Her TV series The Bisexual which she created, wrote, directed and starred in, was made for Channel 4 in 2018 (and is currently screening on SBS / OnDemand in Australia). She has also acted in a number of other works including Lena Dunham's Girls in a role Lena wrote for her.

Throughout the In Conversation, Desiree will speak on topics such as working in film and episodic, acting in your own work vs directing without acting, how you decide what projects you want to do and how you develop them and what issues of diversity meant to her in the development of her career.
